404 SOULS
Earth ended, but the internet didn't.
404 pixel punk relics recovered from a dead network. Each Soul carries a corrupted memory: a Last Message, a Last Seen date, a Last Location.
THE LORE
The world went dark. The servers didn't get the message.
Routers kept blinking on time. Packets kept crossing borders that no longer existed. Somewhere in the cold storage of a dead internet, exactly 404 souls were left behind: fragments of people, archetypes and echoes, still running.
Nobody can tell you who they were. Only what the network kept:
- LAST SEEN a date, somewhere between 1994 and 2042
- LAST LOCATION a city node, a sector, or nowhere at all
- LAST MESSAGE a corrupted memory, decoded from lost sectors
“The name carried error and survival together.
404. Not found. Souls. Still present.”— Writing in Chaos, p. 191

FIND YOUR SOUL
Search the recovered archive by Soul number or by any word in a Last Message. Or let the network match you by date.

SOUL CARDS
Every Soul has a digital Soul Card. Its class, stats, ability and rarity come only from that Soul's on-chain traits, with no randomness: same traits, same card. Tilt it. Click it to flip.
[ i ] These are digital Soul Cards. Physical Soul Cards coming soon. Join the list →
> how rarity works (prototype rules v0.1)
Rarity is a points total from trait combos. Nothing is hidden:
pts = eyewear + era + 3 (crown → LEADER) + 2 (Soul #1 → GENESIS)
| Eyewear | Modifier | pts |
|---|---|---|
| none | Naked Eye | 0 |
| shades_cyan | Cyan Filter (+8 SIG) | 1 |
| shades_black | Blackout Lens (+8 COR) | 1 |
| visor_red | Red Visor (+12 SIG +6 COR) | 3 |
| goggles_blue | no modifier in v0.1 (treated as Naked Eye) | 0 |
| Era | Years | pts |
|---|---|---|
| PRE-2000 | ≤ 1999 | 1 |
| 2000s | 2000–2009 | 0 |
| 2010s | 2010–2019 | 0 |
| 2020s | 2020–2029 | 0 |
| FUTURE SIGNAL | ≥ 2030 | 2 |
| Tier | pts | Souls |
|---|
Stats: SIGNAL / CORRUPTION / MEMORY start from the Form's class base, then add the Text Fragment (ability), Eyewear, Era and Crown, plus a small, transparent "date echo" from the Last Seen month/day/year so Souls with identical traits still differ. Soul #404 is the unique FINAL SOUL. These are prototype game rules for digital Soul Cards. They are not a statement of value.
DEAD NETWORK
Every Soul's Last Location, plotted on what's left of the grid. Drag to pan, scroll or pinch to zoom, tap a node to see who was last seen there. ◆ Neo-Dubai // Sector-7 is the home node.
> OFF-GRID SECTORS // no coordinates. signal unresolved.
Real-world positions are approximate and only anchor the fiction. Off-grid nodes are fictional locations with no place on the map.
OWNERS
Who keeps each Soul running right now. Read straight from the Ethereum contract by your own browser at page load: no API key, no server, no cache.
| Souls held | Links |
|---|
Method: ownerOf(1…404) on the ERC-721 contract, batched through Multicall3 in a few eth_calls to public RPCs (publicnode, dRPC, LlamaRPC, Cloudflare), with automatic fallback. Addresses are shown raw; a holder may be a person, a vault or a marketplace contract.
ORIGIN
404 Souls is a collection of 404 pixel characters on Ethereum. Each one is one of a kind, and there will never be more than 404.
The idea is simple. Earth is gone, but the internet is still running. These 404 Souls were found inside it, and each one keeps a few last details: a Last Message, a Last Seen date and a Last Location. No two Souls share the same details.
WHY EACH SOUL IS RARE
- Only 404 will ever exist. No more Souls can be added.
- Every Soul is one of one. No two share the same face, traits or story.
- Over 70% went to the community for free. 404 Souls were airdropped to the community in 2025, and anyone can check where every Soul sits on the Owners tab.
- Each Soul has its own memory. Its Last Message, Last Seen date and Last Location belong to that Soul alone.
- Ownership is public and permanent. Every Soul lives on the Ethereum blockchain, so anyone can check who owns it, live on the Owners tab.
404 Souls was created by Sagar Vaswani during a difficult time in his life, as a way to keep creating when everything else had stopped. The name comes from that idea: 404 means “not found”, but the Souls are still here.
“I could still create a world when the real one had become unbearable.”
The full story behind 404 Souls is in his book, Writing in Chaos.
